DOGS from all over the Borders will be raising money for new kennels as they excitedly drag their owners to Leaderfoot Viewpoint near Melrose on Sunday in a charity walk.

The funds will go towards a new kennel block at Borders Pet Rescue.

The annual Big Borders Dog Walk - on Sunday, September 11 - will cover a seven mile scenic route to Earlston and back and the organisers hope for a record turnout including dogs successfully rehomed by Borders Pet Rescue.

In the past, up to 70 dogs have taken part and the event has raised thousands of pounds in sponsorship so far.

The charity – formerly known as Borders Animal Welfare Association – is aiming to begin a major fundraising push to increase its capacity to care for dogs in need.

"New kennels are desperately needed cope with demand,” said Simon Cullum, General Manager. "Sadly the number of dogs being abandoned or coming to us because their owners can no longer cope is increasing.

"We are currently drawing up plans to expand our kennels, we know it will cost many thousands of pounds and we are hoping the Big Borders Dog Walk will kick-start our fundraising campaign."

Walkers should gather at Leaderfoot Viewpoint at 10.30am. The route will include some hills and steps and appropriate footwear is strongly recommended.

To register for the walk supporters are asked to email: info@borderspetrescue.org to receive full details including a sponsorship form.

If people cannot make it on the day, they can still take part by sponsoring one of the Borders Pet Rescue’s longest standing residents.
